If you're like me, who are eager to leave the bench and sailing by day and learning to drive a boat, even better than before.

But wait - you might forget the most important part of the sail - the preparation. Before thinking outside the foundry, make sure you go through this ten-point list.

1. The anchor and the horse anchor

From the bow with another piece we often forget - but more importantly -- The art of navigation in their boats. Make sure the anchor rod (long arm), no corners. Make sure the bolts are tight in the heart of manila shackle. Getting at least 50 feet from the box office. Coil down in the box and check for friction (wear) and you.

2. Leaves Rolling line and reel

Furling genoa stay to inclement weather and harmful UV rays. Check the friction and wear of the thread. Cut section irritated and new nodes chair in the thread. Then follow the furling drum line behind the cab. If you see any friction, replace the furling Now - before casting off. This will save you the trouble of having to take that place where we could go sailing.

Hooks 3. Lifeline "

Like its way to the cockpit, looking along the top and bottom each lifeline. Any broken son - called "hook" - a signal of danger to its crew. They can cause cuts or abrasions that lead to infection. Cover with tape to a temporary fix. Work out differences when you return to a more permanent repair.

4. Tenon and Pelican brackets

Inspect all tensors of vital resources and on the basis of each stay and shroud. Pins Replace missing immediately. If you have any lines Life pelican hooks, Make sure the hook shot is safe.

5. Boom vang, traveler and mainsheet

Inspect each piece that carries sail rigging work Chafe and wear. All lines that run in blocks of candle irritated after long use. Pay special attention to three - Vang, traveling, and listening. Replace the line used to prevent failure and loss of sailing time.

6. Fairlead or unroll the sail online

Check the fairlead in Genoa or jib sheet. Most Genoa sheets overlap need not lead lifelines, stanchions, and shrouds. Reeve each sheet through the road blocks and switch node cap Security at the end (see article: "Secrets Marine Knots - Tie the knot ceiling height in less than five seconds). Unwind listening the mainsail and the decline side of the head to run without the inconvenience or Hockler (knots).

7. Get ready to sail furling

Pass your tactics and lines of clew of coral reefs through the first reef in the mainsail washers before departing. If you think need to coral immediately take the soft line of each reef, whereas now they are in your dock. Otherwise, leave enough slack in each line to allow you to hoist the sail all the way to the summit.

8. Try each valve.

Onward and start working their way toward aft. Background check of each valve at the top, sink, shower, raw water intake of the engine, both cockpit scupper drains and other equipment through the hull. Check the shell containing the transducers. Keep caps for type transducer through the hull near.

Do not even think that way if you can go all the bottom valves with ease. If the handles are frozen, a slight stroke hammer often without them. Each foot valves needs a soft wood plug connected to the base with a line of light. In an emergency, a unit of making the valve in the bottom edge to stop the flooding.

9. Inspect bilges

Lift off each access water drainage from the bridge and the excessive control (over 1 "). Locate and repair the source of a leak. Ask a manual test pumps. Lift the float switch with a gaff (or hand) and make sure that activates the pump.

10. Inspection of the engine and a lever changes in testing

Inspect the front engine and rear and work. Make these basic checks each time: * Check the oil, liquid coolant, belts and hoses, the level of transmission fluid.
* Open the bottom valve of the raw water.
* Shine a light down the shaft and check the packaging that excessive losses near the output shaft.
* Leakage of fuel oil or gloss black around joint or joints.
* Drain the water and contaminant type primary fuel filter separator (if installed).
* Locate the fuel valve. Make sure you can disable it easily.
* Review your level of fuel gauge in the tank. Keep in mind 90%.

Start the engine. Hold the throttle at idle. Move the shift lever forward, backward, back to neutral back to neutral. Repeat this test twice. Make sure the vessel complies with every order. So you have confidence that their small diesel happen when you put in place.

As the boss of the veil, that these ten basic inspections of its pre-sailing course checklist. Thus, you can learn to sail a boat better than ever sure you made the best possible preparation - no surprises in the future.
